The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer - To me the characters were extremely lacking. I just couldn't get into any of them. Hackworth, Nell, Miranda... none seemed even remotely realistic to me. It felt like a bunch of cool ideas in science, computers, math, culture looking for a home in a story that never quite materialized.
